Open your video
Play a moment where the words are easy to see.
Turn subtitles off
Open your player’s subtitle menu and choose Off or Disable. If the words disappear, you can watch without them.
Check any words that remain
Copy the video to an empty folder and try again with subtitles off. Words that still appear may be part of the picture and need a different removal method.
Save a copy without selectable subtitles
If you need a file to share, use a desktop app with subtitle export controls, such as HandBrake. Turning subtitles off in a player only changes what you see while watching.
Open the video in HandBrake
Use the desktop app to open your saved file, then choose the output format and preset you need.
Leave unwanted subtitles out
Open the Subtitles tab and remove the entries you do not want, including an automatic Foreign Audio Search entry if present. For a copy with no selectable subtitles, leave the list empty.
Save a new copy
Check the Audio tab for the language you want to keep. Choose a new filename and start the export.
Play the saved file
Watch a scene that had subtitles and listen to the sound. HandBrake creates a fresh video copy, so check the picture quality too.
Check the file you just saved
Open the new copy from its saved folder. Do not rely only on the preview inside the app.
Check the saved video before sharing
- Open the new file and watch a scene that originally had subtitles.
- Check the subtitle menu: no unwanted subtitle languages should be available in a file saved without subtitles.
- Listen near the beginning and end. Check any other audio languages you want to keep.
- If subtitles return, copy the video to an empty folder and reopen it. A nearby subtitle file may be adding them.
- Check the full length and keep the original until you are happy with the result.
If your MP4 will not play in the browser
First check that the original plays on your device and has finished downloading. If it plays there but not in the browser, try saving a fresh MP4 with a video converter.
Open the original in a video converter
Keep the original file. Choose MP4 as the format for the new copy.
Use a standard video preset
Choose a preset suitable for everyday playback. If you need to choose a video setting manually, H.264 is a common option. Keep the same picture size and the audio language you need.
Save and check the copy
Play the new MP4 to check its sound, picture and length, then select it in the browser. Simply changing the filename to end in .mp4 will not convert the video.
If something still looks wrong
Check the saved file before trying the removal again.
Subtitles return when I reopen the video
Likely cause: Your player may turn subtitles back on or load a subtitle file from the same folder.
What to do: For viewing, turn them off in the player. For sharing, check the export’s subtitle settings and test the saved video in an empty folder.
The saved video has the wrong audio language
Likely cause: The export may have kept a different language from the one you wanted.
What to do: Open the original again, choose the language you need in the Audio tab and save another copy.
The words never disappear
Likely cause: They may already be part of the video picture.
What to do: Try a short clip with AI subtitle removal and compare the result before processing a longer video.
Try files with a separate subtitle track
These four-second samples show subtitles you can turn off. Open one in a player with subtitle controls and try it yourself. The third file shows the same video with those subtitles removed. All three are silent.

Questions and answers
Can I just turn off MP4 subtitles?
Yes, if they are selectable in the player’s subtitle menu. That is enough for watching, but it does not delete subtitles from the saved file.
Will saving a new copy change the picture quality?
It can. The HandBrake method makes a fresh video copy, so compare the picture and sound before sharing it. Keep your original.
Why are the words still visible after export?
