There are three different subtitle-removal tasks: hide subtitles in a player, remove a subtitle track you can turn off, or repair text burned into the video.
Hiding subtitles changes playback. Removing a subtitle track creates a new file. Removing burned-in subtitles changes the picture. Pick the outcome you need before choosing a tool.
Hide subtitles for viewing
Use your player’s subtitle menu when you only want to watch without captions. This changes playback and does not necessarily remove anything from the file. If text remains, check for another subtitle source.
Open the saved video
Use a subtitle-capable player such as VLC and go to its Subtitle menu.
Disable the active subtitle track
Select Disable from the available subtitle-track choices.
Check: If the words disappear, you have changed playback; the file itself is unchanged.
Decide whether the file needs changing
For personal viewing, this may complete the task. For a subtitle-free delivery, use the file-removal method below.
Save a copy without selectable subtitles
If you need a file to share, use a desktop app with subtitle export controls, such as HandBrake. Turning subtitles off in a player only changes what you see while watching.
Open the video in HandBrake
Use the desktop app to open your saved file, then choose the output format and preset you need.
Leave unwanted subtitles out
Open the Subtitles tab and remove the entries you do not want, including an automatic Foreign Audio Search entry if present. For a copy with no selectable subtitles, leave the list empty.
Save a new copy
Check the Audio tab for the language you want to keep. Choose a new filename and start the export.
Play the saved file
Watch a scene that had subtitles and listen to the sound. HandBrake creates a fresh video copy, so check the picture quality too.
Repair subtitles in the picture
If the words stay visible with subtitles off, try AI removal on a short clip. AI fills in the area behind the words, so compare the result before using it.
Confirm the words remain in the image
Disable internal and external subtitle display first.
Prepare a supported local clip
Use MP4, MOV or WebM. Convert unsupported files; trim to the scene you need before selecting it.
Process and compare
Review the cost and included duration, then compare the repaired band at matching moments after processing.
Verify the result outside the editor
Open the saved output in a player. If subtitles return, check whether a nearby subtitle file is being loaded automatically. If the words remain with all tracks disabled, they may be burned in.
Check the saved video before sharing
- Open the new file and watch a scene that originally had subtitles.
- Check the subtitle menu: no unwanted subtitle languages should be available in a file saved without subtitles.
- Listen near the beginning and end. Check any other audio languages you want to keep.
- If subtitles return, copy the video to an empty folder and reopen it. A nearby subtitle file may be adding them.
- Check the full length and keep the original until you are happy with the result.
Choose by what you need to preserve
The methods do not make equivalent changes.

Try files with a separate subtitle track
These four-second samples show subtitles you can turn off. Open one in a player with subtitle controls and try it yourself. The third file shows the same video with those subtitles removed. All three are silent.

Questions and answers
Is turning subtitles off the same as deleting them?
No. Turning subtitles off only changes what you see while watching. To share a file without them, save a new copy with unwanted subtitles excluded.
Why are subtitles still visible after I disable the track?
The words may be fixed in the picture, or another set of subtitles may still be on. Check the player’s subtitle menu and try opening the video from an empty folder.
